First Full Day Back to School For Stoneman Douglas High Students

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will return Wednesday for their first full day of class since 17 people were killed on Valentine’s Day.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will be at Stoneman Douglas High school this morning to meet with students and teachers on this first full day since the shooting last month.

Several students and parents are at odds with DeVos over her support for arming teachers. Her visit will be closed to the public.

Last Wednesday, more than a week after the horrific mass shooting, students returned to school but attended classes on a modified half-day schedule.

A heavy police presence will continue to guard the school as students struggle to find a new sense of normal in the wake of the tragedy.

Students will be dismissed Wednesday afternoon at 2:40.

The Florida State House could vote today on a school safety bill that would add some restrictions to gun purchases.

The Senate has already approved the measure, that would raise the legal age to by a firearm to 21 and establish a program to train some school employees to carry guns.

Jen and Bill will speak live to State Senator Anitere Flores of Miami this morning at 8:05 about the latest law to pass in Tallahassee.
