Despite President Donald Trump’s ongoing tension with the media, he will attend the Gridiron Dinner Saturday evening.
The annual dinner is put on by the Gridiron Club and Foundation, which traditionally features the United States Marine Band, along with satirical musical skits by journalists before politicians from both parties and the president deliver speeches.
Saturday night all eyes will be on the President as he mingles with journalists and media outlets he has clashed with in the past.
The Gridiron dinner has been a platform for speakers to jab light-hearted jokes at the president and/or representatives of political parties.
Every president since Grover Cleveland has been subjected to a joke at least once.
Trump skipped last year’s event and sent Vice President Mike Pence as a proxy.
But this year he will be in attendance and although many Americans expect a more thin-skinned Trump he has subjected himself to roasts in the past.
It is still unclear whether Trump will attend the White House Correspondent’s Association dinner April 28.
But the Gridiron dinner may be a stepping stone to breaking bread with the media and maybe give America the chance to see a lighter side of the President.
