Officials are now considering new gun legislation aimed at mental health. The new law, which would be called the “Red Flag law” would give authorities the ability to temporarily remove guns and ammunition from people who warning signs of violence to themselves or to others.
The bill comes into consideration after a 19-year-old man, who was known to have mental health issues, shot and killed 17 people at his former high school in Parkland, Florida.
Lawmakers say that their aim is to limit the amount of school shooting related to mental health and suicides.
If the bill is passed, Florida will not be the first state to initiate it, five other states already have similar laws, according to our news partners at CBS12.
The Florida bill still has to pass in the House which annual 60-day session will be ending on Friday.
